Country: India
City: New Delhi

New Delhi is the capital of India and is situated in the northern Hindi-speaking region of the country. It is a metropolitan city with access to recreational facilities and public transport services like the metro, buses, and taxis. In terms of events and activities, there are cultural, art and music shows organized in the city year round. There are several historical sites and museums in the city and a range of local markets and malls. Delhi experiences a subtropical climate with hot summer months (April to October) with temperatures between 30-45 degrees Celsius. In winter (November to February), the temperature ranges between 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Since people from different states in India migrate to Delhi for employment or educational opportunities, the city is relatively cosmopolitan in nature.

Host Institution: Jamia Millia Islamia

Jamia Millia Islamia was established in 1920, making it one of the oldest Muslim educational institutions sponsored by the central (federal) government. Unlike most national level universities that offer graduate and postgraduate programs, education at Jamia begins in nursery school, proceeds through middle and secondary school, through undergraduate and graduate levels, and ends with Ph.D. programs in nine different faculties. The university attracts students from across India, and their Department of Mass Communication is arguably considered to be one of the best in Delhi. The work culture at the university is formal and somewhat conservative, and the classroom setup is in rows. Since the students are largely exposed to lecture-style teaching, it may take them some time to get used to a communicative teaching methodology and be vocal in the English classes the Fellow will run. Since it is a government-funded university, infrastructure and resources are somewhat limited.

Primary Duties

  • The Fellow will work with pre-service teachers at the Department of Education, and undergraduate students at the Department of Mass Communication.

Secondary Duties

The Fellow may be asked to:

  • Visit the university English Access Microscholarship Program on occasion.
  • Interact with and serve as a mentor to 5-6 Fulbright English Teaching Assistants who are based in New Delhi.
  • Run workshops for Access teachers and students at Jamia Millia Islamia.
