The number of new recruits varies each year depending on the Ministry of Education priorities. Within the two-year training program, the English major trainees receive 928 hours of General Education which includes subjects such as Psychology, Teaching Methodology, Environment, and Culture. The program also includes 1044 hours of English training, and 290 hours of Khmer Studies. As a national institution, RTTC plays a significant role in providing the supply of secondary school teachers for the surrounding provinces.
- The Fellow will provide English instruction, including pronunciation courses, and classes on new teaching methodologies and materials to teacher trainees at Prey Veng Regional Teacher Training Center (RTTC) to ensure that they are prepared to respond to new educational and employment needs. The Fellow will either teach or co-teach selected classes for the pre-service teachers studying to be English teachers.
- The Fellow will teach/co-teach, observe, give feedback to the current teacher trainers, as well as the trainees, while they are doing the teaching practice or micro-teaching in their classrooms. Furthermore, the Fellow and the teacher trainers will learn about each other’s cultures and exchange ideas on teaching methodologies that will help to enrich the teaching techniques of the teacher trainers at Prey Veng RTTC. A Peace Corps Volunteer is placed at the Prey Veng RTTC, so his/her work would complement that of the Fellow.
The Fellow may be asked to:
- Provide professional development workshops to enhance the teacher trainers’ English proficiency level, communication & presentation skills, understanding of U.S. culture and society, and institutional leadership. The Fellow will share information on how U.S. educational institutions are governed as well as practical guidance on how to implement these practices at the RTTC.
