Host Institution: Kandal Regional Teacher Training Center
The Kandal Regional Teacher Training Center (RTTC) is a public institution that provides a 2-year pre-service training program for secondary school teachers (Grades 7-9) for three provinces: Kandal, Kampong Chhnang, and Kampong Speu. The number of new recruits varies each year depending on the Ministry of Education priorities. Within the 2-year training program, the English major trainees receive 928 hours of General Education (Psychology, Teaching Methodology, Environment, Culture, etc.), 1044 hours of English training, and 290 hours of Khmer Studies in the 2-year period to become a secondary school teacher. As a national institution, RTTC plays a significant role in providing a supply of secondary school teachers for the surrounding provinces.
- The Fellow will provide English language instruction and classes on new teaching methodologies for the teacher trainees (pre-service teachers) to ensure that they are prepared to respond to the new educational and employment needs. There are expected to be at least 53 existing students, plus new recruits, at Kandal RTTC starting mid-November 2018. The teachers trained at this location will be deployed to many rural schools including Kandal, Kampong Chhnang, and Kampong Speu.
- The Fellow will also work with the teacher trainers to organize classroom observation, co-teaching, providing feedback and workshops to improve the trainers’ English proficiency as well as their teaching capacity.
The Fellow may be asked to:
- Plan, develop, budget, and deliver presentations on American culture and society to the English Access Microscholarship Program and American Corner in Phnom Penh. The Fellow will assist Access teachers in the teaching of English and plan and conduct workshops to enhance their teaching skills.
