China is a large country in East Asia with a geography similar to the size of the U.S. yet with a population about 4 times that of the U.S. As such a large country, China is diverse in its climate, geography, culture, and ethnicities. There are 56 different ethnicities in China. China is peaceful and Chinese citizens are very curious about western foreigners.
Xi’an is a provincial capital in west-central China with a population of 9 million people. It is a 1.5-hour flight from Beijing. The city is surrounded by mountains, and it is hot and dry in the summer (100F) and cold and dry in the winter (30F). It is easy to travel around the city by bus, subway, or taxi. Some international amenities are available in Xi’an as it is a major tourist destination and there is a small but active ex-pat community.
Host Institution: Xi’an International University
Xi’an International University (XAIU) was established in 1992 as one of the few private universities in China. XAIU is a 4-year university with a student population of 36,000 and faculty and staff of 2,200.
- The Fellow will teach English language, American studies, and exam prep (TOEFL, IELTS) to students preparing for studies overseas.
- The Fellow will conduct teacher training for in-service teachers at the university.
- The Fellow will work with the U.S. Embassy, Consulate and Regional English Language Officer (RELO) on program outreach through teacher training workshops and American cultural activities.

- Work with English clubs and support English activities on campus, including at the American Culture Center.
