The  2022-2023 Fellow application is now open!

Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until all projects are filled, though we encourage you to apply early in order to have the best chance of being considered for all available projects. Candidates that apply before the priority application deadline are the first to enter the project matching phase when it begins in January. Candidates that apply after the priority deadline will only be considered for projects that remain available at the time they enter the applicant pool.

When can you submit an application?

Applications are accepted and reviewed according to the following schedule:

September 30, 2021 Application for the 2022-2023 academic cycle opens
January 31, 2022 Priority application deadline to receive consideration for all available projects
Spring 2022 Project matching begins and continues until all projects are filled
July 2022 Application for the 2022-2023 academic cycle closes
September 2022 Application for the 2023-2024 academic cycle opens

How do you apply?

To apply for the English Language Fellow Program you must complete and submit an application through our online system. You can create an application or access an existing application here or by using the application link at the top of the page. An application does not need to be completed in one sitting. You can begin an application, save it, and come back to it at a later time.

Before starting your application, please read the section below regarding the information and documents you must submit for a complete application. Failure to follow instructions will delay the review of your application. In addition, please read information on the review and selection process so that you understand what happens once your application is submitted. You can also find answers to some common questions about the application and the review and selection process here.

If you are a returning applicant and would like to apply for 2022-2023 projects, your information has been saved in the online system. You have access to the information previously saved in your application, but please note that every year the application is revised and you may need to fill out new sections. You simply need to log back into your application, update any information, and hit submit.

What information do you need to complete an application?

The English Language Fellow Program is a competitive exchange program, and the application process is rigorous. You should review the eligibility requirements for the English Language Fellow Program before starting your application.

The application is extensive and made up of two sections: Personal Information and Fellow Application.  Both sections must be completed before the Fellow Application can be submitted. Once submitted, neither section can be updated so you should ensure that the information you enter is thorough and complete.

In the Personal Information section you will be asked to provide profile details such as preferred name, gender, ethnic background, and dual citizenship status.

In the Fellow Application section you will be asked for the following information:

      • Background Information – Please enter your personal contact information, which we can use to get in touch with you about your application. You will be asked whether you have previously been a recipient of a government grant, such as an English Language Specialist or Peace Corps Volunteer assignment. You should also be prepared to answer questions about any prior US government affiliation as well as your criminal convictions history.
      • Language Skills – While additional language skills are not required, they can be helpful on projects in certain regions. Please let us know what other languages you speak and to what degree.
      • Affiliations and Awards – To demonstrate your commitment to the field of English language teaching, please list all affiliations to organizations or professional associations, such as TESOL International, regional TESOLs, NABE, or others. You will also be able to enter any relevant awards or accolades received throughout the course of your career.
      • Education/Credentials – This section asks you to enter details of your academic background, including relevant degrees, certificates, diplomas, and state ESL endorsements or other required credentials for eligibility.
      • References – You must share contact information for at least two professional references. One of the two references should be your current or most recent supervisor who has observed you in the classroom. We will email your references a link to an electronic questionnaire with six questions. It is recommended to reach out to your references to ensure receipt of the email because many email providers reroute these messages to Spam/Junk folders. References should be able to speak about your ability to succeed in the Fellow Program by providing examples of your work ethic, initiative, leadership skills, resourcefulness, flexibility, judgment, classroom management skills, and overall strengths and weaknesses. Reference responses are confidential. Your application is not complete until the two required references have responded.
      • Professional Experience – You will enter information for all of your relevant professional experience, including employer name, city, state, and country, as well as your title, employment dates, average hours per week and instructional hours (if applicable). Please note, this information will be reviewed with your Resume/CV, so the two should match.
      • Professional Capabilities – You will answer a series of questions in 70 words or less providing specific evidence of your experience in any of these areas:
          • ESL, (domestic) English as a second language;
          • EFL, (international) English as a foreign language;
          • K-12, (domestic) e.g., SIOP, bilingual schools, ESL aid/assistant;
          • K-12, (international) e.g., international schools, bilingual education, language schools, language tutoring centers;
          • Content-based instruction, e.g., STEM/STEAM, current affairs, arts;
          • Higher Education, e.g., universities, community colleges, IEPs, vocational or technical schools;
          • Adult Education, e.g., language schools, community language classes, professional language institutes;
          • Presentations/workshops/other, e.g., state/regional conferences, presenting at staff professional development meetings, leading voluntary professional development meetups;
          • Teacher training, e.g., teaching methodology classes for an MA TESOL program, conducting an in-service professional development program for a school district, teaching a TESOL certificate course;
          • Training of trainers, e.g., district-wide training events, leading best-practices workshops or classes for TESOL professionals who train pre- or in-service teachers, teacher education MOOCs or series;
          • Materials and/or resource development, e.g., course modules, online lesson development, textbook material;
          • Syllabus evaluation/design/development;
          • English for Academic Purposes, e.g., academic writing, research, publications;
          • English for Specific Purposes, e.g., law, business, journalism, tourism;
          • Instructional technology, e.g., teaching online courses, designing an LMS for your program, integrating digital platforms in classroom teaching;
          • Testing and assessment development, e.g., at the district, school, or classroom level;
          • TOEFL or IELTS test prep or scoring.
      • Resume/CV – You will be prompted to upload a copy of your current resume/CV, make sure it is up-to-date with all of your relevant professional experience. Please include all experience that helps define your professional background such as full-time and part-time teaching experience, adult education, volunteer language instruction/tutoring/clubs, and classroom experience in fields outside of TESOL.
      • Essays, Lesson Plans, and Additional Documents
          • Statement of purpose: This narrative, in 500 words, is designed to give the reviewers an idea of your motivation to be a Fellow. It is an opportunity to explain what you hope to contribute to the program as a cultural ambassador and English language teaching professional. We also want to know how you would assess your cultural adaptability and how this experience will relate to your future goals as an English language teaching professional.
          • Short answer questions: In 250 words each, you will respond to four questions regarding your ability to succeed in the Fellow Program. You will need to supply examples of your work ethic, initiative, leadership skills, resourcefulness, flexibility, judgment, and classroom management skills. These examples may include intercultural contexts both in the U.S. and abroad.
          • Lesson plans: One ESL/EFL classroom lesson plan is required of all applicants. An additional teacher training module is optional; however, it is required if an applicant wishes to be considered for projects that are primarily teacher training. In both cases, these must be original lesson plans or modules that you have personally developed and used in your work.
          • Additional documents: You must upload the transcript for your qualifying graduate level degree plus applicable TESOL certificates and/or K-12 ESL state credentials. Failure to submit these will prevent you from being considered eligible for the program. In addition, you may upload any TESOL related professional presentations, publications, honors or awards, leadership activities, or other information from relevant projects you have led or contributed to.
      • Regional Preferences – This is your opportunity to indicate any preferences to work in a certain region. However, you should be aware that applicants are matched to projects based on their professional skill set, experience, and the needs of the project. Applicant preferences will be taken into consideration when possible, but you may not be matched within your preferred region. The more flexibility you indicate in terms of where you are willing to serve, the greater your chances are of being selected for a fellowship.
      • Additional Experience Abroad – Please provide information about other relevant experience abroad. You will need to provide details related to country, purpose, type of position (study abroad, volunteer, presentation/conference, or other), and dates.
      • Dependent/Family Information – This section gives you an opportunity to tell us about any family members who would accompany you on a fellowship. This information may help us facilitate a successful match. Your answer to this question will not preclude you from being considered for the English Language Fellow Program; however, you may not be considered for certain projects due to special requirements or restrictions.
