Fellow Leads Oral Assessment Workshop in Vietnam

Fellow Sara Butryn led the first teacher training workshop of the 2016-2017 academic year at Hung Vuong University. Members from the HVU Foreign Languages Department attended as well as one teacher from the Gifted High School and the Gifted Secondary School. The workshop was on oral assessment and covered achievement-based assessment, student learning outcomes (SLOs), and creating practical oral rubrics for course assessment. Workshop attendees learned about current research-backed best practices in assessment and participated in activities aimed at designing course SLOs and course-specific rubrics.

Vietnam is currently undergoing major changes in foreign language education, particularly English language education. Standards for both students and instructors are being raised and more focus is being placed on communicative ability. By providing instructors with both theoretical, background and practical knowledge, they will ideally be better equipped to use best practices in terms of oral assessment in their courses.
