American folk music in Tajikistan

English Language Fellows Sarah Carter and Chris Meoli held a small American folk music concert in the central park of Khorog, Tajikistan. Throughout the one and a half hour performance, 30 to 40 students, teachers, and locals gathered to listen to the songs being played live. The audience was interested in learning about the different ways American folk music is played and the instruments Carter and Meoli were playing.

The purpose of the event was to expose the community to forms of traditional and modern American Folk music and to compare music styles with the local Pamiri music. The event was a great success as many students and locals stayed afterward to try to play the instruments and talk about different types of music in their respective cultures.
