Introducing MOOCs to teachers and students in Ukraine

English Language Fellow Emily Magaziner welcomed English teachers and students to the U.S. Embassy Kyiv-sponsored English Teaching Resource Center (ETRC) for a seminar on massive open online courses (MOOCs). Magaziner presented an overview of the MOOC movement and demonstrated how to register, enroll, and participate in MOOCs.

Magaziner and the attendees of the seminar explored current English- and pedagogy-related course offerings, such as the University of California, Berkeley- and U.S. Department of State-sponsored MOOC, “Principles of Written English,” which began just a few days before Magaziner arrived in Kyiv.

At the end of the event, several participants expressed interest in enrolling in upcoming MOOCs. One participant even requested a series of group MOOC sessions in which a group of participants enrolled in a specific MOOC could gather for a weekly seminar. Magaziner plans to partner with the ETRC to offer a series like this in the future and to moderate future sessions.
