Island-hopping in the Maldives

English Language Fellow Cynthia Yoder traveled to the Maldives to hold workshops with five groups of English teachers on four different islands—Fuvah Mulah, Addu, Male, and Ukulhas.

The workshops, entitled “Interactive Learning in English Language Classrooms,” focused on reflective teaching, classroom management, teaching reading, and creating practice activities for speaking and writing.

Yoder’s sessions focused on interaction, using warmers and energizers, and 26 to 48 teachers participated in each group, with a total of 168 teachers attending the two and three-day workshops.

The participants expressed enthusiasm for the interactive nature of the workshops and the practical ideas Yoder shared. The teachers stated their intentions to apply what they had learned to their classrooms, with the confidence that such activities would increase student interest and participation.
