Students Attend Workshop in Bukittiniggi, West Sumatra

English Language Fellow Alicia Brill and Young Southeast Asia Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) recipient Oktavino Dhia led a workshop on Trend Techniques and Strategies to Improve Students’ English Proficiency to 30 students at Institute Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) in Bukittiniggi, West Sumatra.

Alicia presented on learning styles and strategies, authentic materials, American slang, and study abroad opportunities in the United States. Dhia shared her experiences and motivations for learning English and described her international travels. She also discussed her involvement in YSEALI and Good Virus Maker; a community service project in Solok where she teaches free English classes and environmental awareness. Dhia is a visionary leader and is passionate about sharing, learning, and improving her community.

IAIN Bukittinggi students were actively engaged and receptive participants during the 2-day workshop, which was initiated following the Supporting Muslim Indonesian Language Educators (SMILE) conference in Pekanbaru.
